Unified MMA: The Engine Powering Canadian Fighters
Share
Canada’s mixed-martial-arts landscape has matured dramatically over the past decade. What used to be a patchwork of regional shows is evolving into a national network capable of producing world-class talent. At the heart of this evolution stands Unified MMA. The promotion is more than just an event organiser: it’s become a ladder, a platform, and arguably the most influential engine in Canadian fighter development.
1) Founder’s Vision: Sunny Sareen’s Journey
Sunny Sareen’s story begins not in the boardroom but in the gym, the crowds and the gritty early regional shows. A lifelong fan of combat sports, Sareen began promoting professional MMA in 2009, initially as a hobby.
The early years were lean. As Sareen admitted, “the first 4 or 5 shows … we didn’t make any money.”
But instead of retreating, he leaned in. His vision evolved: Canada needed a promotion that offered fighters more than a local win - it needed exposure, quality production, and a real chance to ascend. With that, Unified set out to professionalise regional MMA in a market that often bypassed its own home-grown talent in favour of U.S. offers.

2) From Local Shows to National Reach
Starting around Edmonton and Calgary, Unified began slowly but steadily. Over time they built the momentum to hold multiple shows in a year, expand to other provinces, and secure broadcast deals. For instance, in October 2022 they announced 3 events in 3 different Canadian cities within one month planned for December 2022: a first in Canadian MMA history.
By mid-2024 the promotion was staging two shows on the same night in different cities, citing the sheer number of fighters under contract and broadcast demand. Sareen called it “the biggest night in regional Canada combat sports in history.”
Today, Unified MMA lists events aired live on UFC Fight Pass, giving Canadian fighters access to a global audience.
3) What Unified Offers Canadian Fighters
For a Canadian fighter (especially one not yet under a major global promotion), Unified offers several critical advantages:
- A credible platform with national footprint and broadcast exposure
- A visible pathway for career progression and brand building
- Opportunities outside the typical local gym-to-fight circuit
- Regional relevance (especially in Alberta) but expanding nationally: opening up more match-ups and exposure
The promotion’s ambition is clear: showcase Canada’s top-ranked fighters, export them to global stages, and profile them in events that mirror major-league production.

4) Alberta & Calgary: A Regional Advantage
For NorthBlood - operating out of Alberta/Calgary - Unified’s presence in the province offers strategic alignment. Unified consistently runs shows in the Edmonton area (Enoch, AB) and has expanded to Calgary and Toronto. Their ability to rotate venues keeps the local fight scene vibrant.
This regional activity means local fighters are less forced to travel far for exposure, and local brands (like yours) can cultivate relationships, meet fighters face-to-face, and build stronger partnerships.
5) Challenges, Vision & Future Moves
Growth hasn’t come without friction. Canada’s regulatory framework across provinces is uneven, venues are scarce, broadcast deals must be negotiated, and athlete logistics multiply quickly when you scale. In his interview, Sareen noted how things “pop up” when times are tight.
Unified’s future includes:
- Increasing show count (18-20 per year)
- Venturing into new provinces (Quebec, etc) and new countries (Colombia, United Arab Emirates, etc)
- Deepening broadcast and production quality
- Supporting the talent pipeline with 50+ fighters under contract already
For fighters and brands, the takeaway is: growth is possible, but you need infrastructure, alignment, and strategic partnerships.
Unified is no longer just a local event promoter: it’s a national engine. A central part of what Canadian fighters will use as the ladder to world stages. As the promotion grows, the opportunities for representation, branding, and merch increase.
Unified MMA has built more than shows: it’s built a pathway. Under Sunny Sareen’s leadership, starting in 2009 as a hobby and evolving into a national force, the promotion is one of the most important platforms for Canadian fighters today.
